London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s office falsely claimed that knife crime had reduced since he took office, but non-partisan statistics revealed a 40% increase in knife-related offenses.
The Office for Statistics Regulation accused Khan’s office of spreading incorrect information, prompting a response from Khan’s team.

Director-general at the Office for Statistics (ONS) Regulation Ed Humpherson alleged, “Part of the statement is incorrect and has the potential to mislead the public.
A spokesperson for Kahn told reporters, “further detail has been added to a press release issued in July 2023 around the specific reductions achieved with knife crime in the capital”, after Humpherson’s criticism was raise.
“We will stop at nothing until criminals are locked up and our streets are safer again,” said Tory London Assembly Member Susan Hall.

Hall also promised to “take the scourge of knife crime” and empower police to execute “searches faster and less intrusively.”
