Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, president of the UN climate summit, stated that there is no scientific basis for eliminating fossil fuels to combat global warming, arguing that sustainable economic growth is not possible without them.
His comments sparked criticism from UN officials and climate activists advocating for a transition to green energy.
Al Jaber’s presidency has been marred by controversies, including potential conflicts of interest related to his roles in state-owned renewable and oil and gas companies. (Trending: Olympic Gold Medalist Sentenced For Jan 6)

“There is no science out there, or no scenario out there, that says the phase-out of fossil fuel is what’s going to achieve 1.5,” said Al Jaber.
“Please help me, show me the roadmap for a phase-out of fossil fuel that will allow for sustainable socioeconomic development, unless you want to take the world back into caves,” continued Al Jaber.
Despite this, the summit has led to significant developments, such as pledges to a climate reparations fund and new methane emissions regulations in the US.
“This story is just another attempt to undermine the Presidency’s agenda, which has been clear and transparent and backed by tangible achievements by the COP president and his team,” said a spokesperson for COP28.
“As COP28 continues this week, the COP president is focused on working with parties to deliver a plan that will deliver maximum transition and minimal disruption for everyone in the world. He has repeatedly communicated our position on fossil fuels and invited all parties to work together and come up with solutions that can achieve alignment, common ground and consensus,” added the spokesperson.
