The U.S. State Department called for his release and immediate medical treatment.
“A new prisoner blocked part of the production line and Paul asked him to move out of the way,” the report stated.
“After repeated requests, the prisoner hit Paul in the face, breaking Paul’s glasses in the process, and attempted to hit him a second time.”
“I stood up to block the second hit, being concerned that he had sharp shears in his hand that could be used as a weapon,” Whelan said.
“Other prisoners stopped him from further assault while I left the area, looking for guards,” Whelan added.
“There are no guards on the factory floor and it was quite difficult for me to find prison staff to assist.”
“We understand he is receiving medical treatment following this incident,” the U.S. State Department said.
Whelan’s brother believed he was targeted due to anti-American sentiments among other prisoners.
The U.S. has denied Whelan’s espionage charges.
