The Biden administration has granted limited exceptions to sanctions on a Venezuelan airline, allowing deportation flights of Venezuelan illegal immigrants from Canada and Latin America to Venezuela.
The Treasury Department authorized transactions for Conviasa, the state airline, for deportation flights, but the sanctions remain in place.
The move is part of efforts to curb illegal migration from Venezuela, with the U.S. starting deportation flights directly to Venezuela and repatriating over 12,000 Venezuelans since May. (Trending: Tucker Reveals The Moment He Became A Full-Blown Trump Supporter)
The Trump administration issued the sanctions alleging that the Maduro regime used the airline “to shuttle corrupt regime officials around the world to fuel support for its anti-democratic efforts.”
The move by the Treasury Department authorization allows a limited exception for “all transactions ordinarily incident and necessary to the repatriation of Venezuelan nationals from non-U.S. jurisdictions in the Western Hemisphere to Venezuela,” according to the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
However, this has drawn criticism from immigrant activists due to safety concerns in Venezuela.
“Temporary protected status provides individuals already present in the United States with protection from removal when the conditions in their home country prevent their safe return,” said DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in a press release.
Adding “That is the situation that Venezuelans who arrived here on or before July 31 of this year find themselves in.”
Additionally, the U.S. allows Venezuelan migrants to enter via a humanitarian program, which has sparked accusations of parole authority abuse from Republicans.
