Many Americans are considering the potential for California Governor Gavin Newsom to emerge as a new leader for the Democratic Party.
Both Newsom and President Biden have similar approval ratings and similar levels of support in a hypothetical matchup against former President Donald Trump.

Newsom would likely appeal to moderates, independents, and undecided voters.
Newsom performs about the same as Biden with voting groups:
• Women give Biden 45% and Newsom 46%
• Suburban voters give Biden 44% and Newsom 41%
• Black voters give Biden 53% and Newsom 57%
• Moderates give Biden 41% and Newsom 38%
Fox News found that Biden received 46% to Trump’s 50% among registered voters in a head-to-head matchup.
However, Newsom would have significant difficultly commanding national political attention.
In a hypothetical matchup, Newsom receives 45% support compared to Trump at 49%.
