Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, is facing a lawsuit from 33 states alleging that it knowingly allowed and pursued users under the age of 13 on its platforms.
The lawsuit claims that Meta actively sought underage users, failed to disable their accounts, and collected their data without parental consent, violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
The complaint also raises concerns about the negative impact of Meta’s platforms on young users, particularly on teen girls, and their mental health. (Trending: Donald Trump Confronts Bud Light CEO)

“Thirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse,” wrote The Wall Street Journal.
“Comparisons on Instagram can change how young women view and describe themselves,” added the outlet.
Researchers reported that, “Teens blame Instagram for increases in the rate of anxiety and depression.”
Adding, “This reaction was unprompted and consistent across all groups.”
Additionally, Meta has advocated for federal legislation that would place more responsibility on parents for their children’s app downloads.
