The president of the United Nations’ annual climate summit, Sultan Al Jaber, has been reported to have planned to lobby countries and business leaders to increase exports of oil and gas, according to leaked documents.

This has prompted fury from environmental groups and raised concerns about conflict of interest, as Al Jaber is also the CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

The fact that the United Arab Emirates is hosting the climate summit has also raised concerns, given its high per capita greenhouse gas emissions. (Trending: Another Major Company Goes Woke And Goes Broke)

A spokesperson for COP28 told the Centre for Climate Reporting, “Dr Sultan [Al Jaber] holds a number of positions alongside his role as COP28 President-Designate.”

“That is public knowledge,” continued the spokesperson.

Adding, “Private meetings are private, and we do not comment on them.”

Policy coordinator at Greenpeace International, Kaisa Kosonen, wrote in a statement, “If the allegations are true, this is totally unacceptable and a real scandal.”

“The climate summit leader should be focused on advancing climate solutions impartially, not backroom deals that are fueling the crisis, said Kosonen.

“This is exactly the kind of conflict of interest we feared when the CEO of an oil company was appointed to the role,” revealed the policy expert.

The situation has sparked criticism and questions about the impartiality of the summit’s leadership.
