The U.S. Supreme Court has ordered Arizona House Speaker Ben Toma and Senate President Warren Pettersen to testify and provide documents in a lawsuit challenging two Arizona voter suppression laws.
The lawsuit argues that these laws violate several federal acts and constitutional provisions.
Toma and Pettersen had previously intervened in the lawsuit to defend the laws, but the district court found that they waived their legislative privilege and ordered them to produce communications related to the laws. (Trending: Donald Trump Confronts Bud Light CEO.)
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals temporarily paused this order, but later lifted the pause.
The Supreme Court has now denied their request to pause the 9th Circuit’s order, meaning they will have to provide the requested documents and could be deposed.
