The White House opposes a House Republican bill that aims to stop migrant housing on federal lands.
The bill, introduced by Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, would prevent federal funds from being used to house certain noncitizens, including migrants seeking asylum, on federal properties.
The legislation includes a clause that would cancel a lease agreement allowing New York City to use Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn as an emergency shelter for migrants. (Trending: Biden Shamefully Removes God From National Address)
“The Administration opposes this legislation because it would significantly restrict the ability of the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture to make decisions regarding the appropriate uses of their lands and resources, even in emergency or other situations,” the statement read.
“Not only did President [Joe] Biden create this crisis but he unfairly wants to continue taking tax dollars and public spaces like Floyd Bennett Field from citizens to perpetuate it,” Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) said.
“Last month’s total southern border encounters marked the busiest October in decades of [U.S. Customs and Border Protection] records. And the harsh reality of the Biden Administration’s border crisis continues to impact millions of Americans in cities across the country,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
The bill’s passage in the House is expected, but it faces challenges in the Democrat-controlled Senate.
The bill is part of a larger debate in Congress over linking funds to national security priorities to U.S. border security reforms.
