Republican Celeste Maloy won Utah’s special election for the 2nd Congressional District, defeating state Sen. Kathleen Riebe.
The election was triggered by the resignation of former Republican Rep. Chris Stewart, and Maloy, who served as Stewart’s chief legal counsel, emphasized her roots in rural southern Utah and her support for Donald Trump.
“It’s exciting that we’re going to have somebody come out of this primary that represents rural and southern Utah. I think it’s time for that, and everybody’s ready for it,” Maloy said.
Riebe, on the other hand, positioned the race as a Democratic pickup opportunity and highlighted her experience as a school teacher and her concerns about the nation’s rising debt.
“Coming to a very rational decision and having very moderate ideas, I think that is what serves us best,” Riebe said.
Maloy is the favorite to win the special election based on Stewart’s previous victories.
