A judge has struck down an effort to enshrine reproductive rights, including abortion, in Nevada’s constitution, citing the proposed ballot initiative as too broad and containing a misleading description of effect.
The judge’s decision comes as abortion rights advocates in Nevada aim to put the question before voters in 2024.
The initiative, if passed, would have amended the state constitution to include the “fundamental right to reproductive freedom,” covering various aspects of reproductive care. (Trending: Biden’s Mental Decline Getting Even Worse)
“This is probably the clearest case I have seen that I think there is a violation of the single-subject rule,” said Judge James T. Russell.
“I’ve seen a lot of them over the years and in respect to this particular matter, there are too many subjects,” he continued.
Adding, “Not all of which are functionally related to each other.”
The ruling has sparked discussions about possible appeals and reflects the ongoing nationwide mobilization on abortion access, with advocates on both sides seeking to get related questions on the ballot in multiple states.
The issue is expected to remain central in Nevada’s political landscape, with Democrats aiming to have reproductive rights on the 2026 ballot.
