New York has been ranked as the “least free state” in the United States by a study conducted by the Cato Institute, scoring poorly in economic, social, and personal freedoms.
The state ranked last for economic freedom and has consistently been at the bottom of the index since 2000.
In contrast, Florida ranked as one of the most free states due to not imposing an income tax on its residents.
The study recommends that New York policymakers improve the state by reducing spending and taxes, paying down debt, and abolishing rent control laws.
Other states, such as Hawaii and California, also ranked poorly in the study.
