A significant number of Venezuelan migrants who traveled to the United States have decided to return home due to difficulties finding work and enrolling their children in school.

About 20,000 migrants arrived in Chicago after August 2022, many of whom ended up sleeping at O’Hare Airport.

The city has been working to increase capacity and provide food and medical care, but the migrants are becoming increasingly disheartened.

“The American Dream doesn’t exist anymore. There’s nothing here for us… We just want to be home. If we’re going to be sleeping in the street here, we’d rather be sleeping in the streets over there,” said one immigrant.

The state of Illinois has spent $330 million to house and feed migrants, and Governor J.B. Pritzker has expressed frustration with the lack of federal assistance.

“The humanitarian crisis is overwhelming our ability to provide aid to the refugee population. Unfortunately, the welcome aid Illinois has been providing to these asylum seekers has not been matched with support by the federal government,” wrote Illinois Gov J.B Pritzker (D).
