The Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal from Derek Chauvin, the ex-cop convicted in the murder of George Floyd.

Chauvin’s legal team argued that the trial was influenced by political upheaval and potential riots, but both the Supreme Court and the Minnesota Supreme Court declined to hear the case, upholding Chauvin’s conviction.

Chauvin is serving a sentence of more than two decades in prison.

“This criminal trial generated the most amount of pretrial publicity in history,” Chauvin’s attorney William Morhmann stated.

“More concerning are the riots which occurred after George Floyd’s death (and) led the jurors to all express concerns for their safety in the event they acquitted Mr. Chauvin — safety concerns which were fully evidenced by surrounding the courthouse in barbed wire and National Guard troops during the trial and deploying the National Guard throughout Minneapolis prior to jury deliberations.”

He recently filed a motion claiming new evidence showing he didn’t cause Floyd’s death and requested a new trial or a hearing to present the new evidence.

The evidence involves a pathologist’s theory that Floyd died from a rare tumor, which Chauvin claims would have affected the jury’s decision.

Floyd’s killing led to widespread protests and riots across the U.S. and Europe.
