A recent Gallup poll found that Americans are experiencing heightened fears about certain crimes, with concerns about murder, car theft, mugging, and identity theft at near-record highs.

This increased apprehension has led to a significant impact on daily activities, such as walking alone at night and attending public events.

“If you watch local TV news in almost any city in the country almost any night, you’ll see scary stories about crime in your community,” sociologist Barry Glassner said.

“My recommendation is to get the facts,” Glassner added.

“See whether, in fact, crime is up in your community or if instead you’re hearing a lot about specific incidents that may in fact be alarming, but that do not in any way indicate a trend that you need to worry about.”

However, these fears are not in line with the downward trend of violent crime in the US, as reported by government data.

Despite the decrease in crime rates, the public’s concerns are being fueled by local news and political influences.
