The White House challenged the validity of a Republican-led impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden’s son’s business dealings, arguing that the House did not formally authorize the inquiry as required by the Constitution.

The White House Special Counsel Dick Sauber demanded that subpoenas and interview requests be withdrawn, stating that they are part of an ongoing Justice Department investigation and are outside the scope of the impeachment inquiry.

“In fact, both of you previously supported the position that moving forward with an impeachment inquiry without a vote of the House ‘represents an abuse of power and brings discredit to the House of Representatives,’ ” wrote the White House attorney. Sauber’s demand referenced a 2019 resolution rejecting then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to initiate an impeachment inquiry into former president Donald Trump.

“Both of you have publicly admitted that your investigation is driven by the partisan political goal to hurt the President, raising additional serious concerns that you are improperly weaponizing the oversight powers of Congress,” claimed Sauber.

“Speaker Johnson joined you in admitting that partisan political concerns were guiding the House’s decision-making in this process,” he continued.

Additionally, the White House criticized the investigation as being driven by partisan political goals, while Rep. Comer challenged the White House staff to testify in front of Congress and exonerate themselves.
