Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has requested an August 5, 2024, trial date for former President Donald Trump’s election interference case in Georgia, potentially coinciding with the November presidential election.
Trump’s lawyers oppose the date, arguing for trial dates after the election.
Willis has charged Trump and co-defendants under Georgia’s RICO Act, alleging they constituted a criminal organization.
“Fani Willis has again proven that her case is purely political, designed to interfere with President Trump’s re-election by demanding a trial date in the most vital time in President Trump’s winning campaign,” wrote Trump’s campaign spokesman Steven Cheung.
Willis reportedly predicted the case will extend into 2025.
“I think the case will be on appeals for years … I believe in that case there will be a trial,” she reportedly said in an interview.
“I believe the trial will take many months,” she added.
“And I don’t expect that we will conclude until the winter or the very early part of 2025,” concluded the DA.
The case may extend into 2025. Despite potential overlap with the election, Willis stated that election cycles don’t factor into her decisions.
“I don’t, when making decisions about cases to bring, consider an election cycle or an election season, does not go into calculus, explained Willis about whether she considered the election when filing charges.
She added, “What goes into calculus is this is the law. These are the facts. And if the facts show you violated the law, then charges are brought.
Trump leads in polls for the Republican 2024 presidential nomination and has a narrow lead over President Joe Biden in Georgia.
