Bethlehem has removed Christmas decorations to express solidarity with Gaza amid the ongoing conflict, citing the inappropriate nature of festivities during the current situation.
The decision aims to convey a message of condolence and mourning.
“Bethlehem Municipality crews announced the dismantling of Christmas decorations installed several years ago in the city’s neighborhoods and removing all festive appearances in honor of the martyrs and in solidarity with our people in Gaza,” the municipality posted. While some religious ceremonies will still occur, the traditional Christmas tree and decorations in Manger Square have been removed.
This is not the first time Bethlehem has been used as a site of protest, as in 2017 the Palestinian Authority responded to President Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by denouncing the move and turning off Christmas tree lights.
