Donald Trump’s lawyers sought to end the New York civil fraud trial, arguing that the state failed to prove the former president intended to deceive banks and others by inflating his wealth.
The legal team requested a directed verdict, claiming the state had failed to meet any legal standard.
The judge has not yet made a decision but has shown interest in seeing the trial through. (Trending: Supreme Court Dismisses Case To Keep Trump Off Ballot)
The defense emphasized Trump’s testimony and argued that the claims against his sons should be dismissed.
“There’s no victim. There’s no complainant. There’s no injury. All of that is established now by the evidence,” attorney Christopher Kise said.
Kise pressed that Letitia James was attempting to “substitute her judgment for that of the banks and, frankly, for that of someone who has been involved in the real estate industry for 50 years.”
Kise said that if discussing real estate, “if my choices were Donald Trump or Attorney General James, respectfully, I would go with Donald Trump.”
“I’m sorry to say that my clients have been dragged into what is essentially a fight between the attorney general and their father, but here we are,” Trump Jr. attorney Clifford Robert said. “The time has come that we need to put an end to it.”
The state rested its case after six weeks of testimony.
