Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia has announced that he will not seek reelection in 2024, giving Republicans an opportunity to potentially secure the heavily GOP state’s Senate seat.
Manchin expressed that he had accomplished his goals for West Virginia and now intends to focus on mobilizing the middle and unifying Americans.
“I believe in my heart of hearts that I have accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia,” he said. (Trending: Donald Trump Gets Great News)

“I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for re-election to the United States Senate, but what I will be doing is traveling the country and speaking out to see if there is an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring Americans together.”
His decision to retire poses a significant challenge for Democrats in holding onto the coal-country seat, as he has been the only Democrat elected to statewide office in West Virginia in recent years.
Republican contenders have already expressed interest in the Senate seat, with GOP Rep. Alex Mooney and former state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey being potential candidates.
