Pro-Palestinian protesters attempted to storm the Incirlik Air Base in Turkey ahead of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit.
The protesters threw projectiles at riot police, who responded with tear gas and water cannons.
Blinken’s visit to Turkey is focused on discussions about the Israel-Hamas conflict, Russia’s war in Ukraine, NATO unity, and Sweden’s potential accession to NATO.
The protests come amidst Turkey’s recall of its ambassador to Israel and concerns over humanitarian aid to Gaza.
“There was a very nice rally here, with speeches. May Allah save us and all Muslim countries from this [sic] American bases.” Fehmi Bülent Yıldırım, president of Muslim agency IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation said.
“Don’t worry, hopefully the echoes of this will be beneficial all around the world.”
Pro-Palestinian demonstrations have also taken place in other cities, including Washington D.C.
